Bench vs Cleared · interactive comparison
By Raman Singh, EA, CFP® · Updated May 2026
A Bench alternative built for consultants, not general small business.
Bench is a capable general-purpose bookkeeping service. It is not built for independent consultants with S-corp elections, variable 1099 income, and quarterly estimates that need to move with their books. Here is the honest, plotted comparison.

One advisor for books, tax, and planning
Short answer
If you are a 1099 consultant or private-practice owner netting $100K or more, Bench gives you accurate books but leaves the high-leverage decisions — S-corp election, quarterly estimates, retirement contributions — to you or a separate CPA who does not see your books in real time. Cleared connects those decisions to your books because the same credentialed advisor runs both.
Continuity matters
When the platform goes dark, your data goes with it.
In December 2024, Bench shut down without warning. Thousands of business owners lost access to their books mid-tax-season. The company was acquired and relaunched, but the structural risk — proprietary software you don’t own — is still there.

Coverage map
Books are the floor. Strategy is the ceiling.
Both services produce monthly books. Where they differ is everything that surrounds those books — the S-corp call, the Q3 estimate adjustment, the December 401(k) move, the IRS letter that needs answering. Hover any axis to see the gap.

Decision logic
Which one fits your situation?
We’d rather you pick the right tool than the wrong one with us. Here’s how to decide.
Bench makes sense when...
General-purpose bookkeeping
- ·General small business with simple revenue and no S-corp
- ·Under $80K net profit where tax planning is less consequential
- ·You only need accurate books and year-end financials
- ·No plans for S-corp election or retirement plan optimization
Cleared makes sense when...
Books + tax + strategy, one advisor
- ✓Independent consultant or 1099 contractor netting $100K or more
- ✓Private-practice therapist, psychologist, or licensed professional
- ✓S-corp election active, planned, or worth modeling
- ✓Variable income where quarterly estimates need to move with your P&L
- ✓You want one advisor connecting bookkeeping, tax, and planning decisions
The gap Bench does not close
Accurate books are the floor, not the ceiling.
Bench will give you clean books and a year-end financial package. What it will not do is tell you that your S-corp election would save $11,000 this year, that your Q3 estimated payment is short by $4,000 because revenue spiked in July, or that you have until December 31 to make a Solo 401(k) contribution that reduces your taxable income by $23,000.
Those decisions require someone who sees your books in real time and has the credentials to act on them. An Enrolled Agent has full IRS representation authority. A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ brings retirement and planning strategy. A bookkeeper, however skilled, has neither.
At $100K net profit, missing one of those moves costs more than a year of bookkeeping fees. That is the gap Cleared is built to close.
